February 2009 is going to be the month for all things Friday the 13th
. Platinum Dunes’ new movie strikes theaters on the 13th, re-releases of the first three films arrive in Deluxe Edition DVDs on February 3rd as does the new documentary His Name Was Jason
. Paramount Home Entertainment is going to keep the love rolling with the DVD debut of Friday the 13th: The Second Season. The sophomore run of the television show starring John D. Lemay, Louise Robey and Chris Wiggins will street on February 10th.

FEARnet caught up with Jared Padalecki (Supernatural) on the set of the new Friday the 13th film where he dished on all the dirt about shooting a remake to one of the most popular horror franchises of all time including which kill he digs the most.
What’s your favorite kill in this movie?
My favorite kill is the kill of the police officer who sort’ve comes to check up on us. And we know Jason’s outside, we know someone’s killing off these people in this group of friends that I’ve hooked up with – and we hear knocking on the door outside and at first we’re a little panicky but then we’re like “Why would this guy knock?” So we go to check out the door and it’s a police officer and I start to let him in and as I let him in – Danielle Panabaker’s character, Jenna, sees Jason drop down from the roof and shove a fire place poker through the police man’s eye, through the door, and right in front of me. And we take off. And that’s really the point in the movie where everything comes to a head and just explodes. And after that everything’s so fast paced and moving so quickly and everything’s so hectic and that’s when the audience is really gonna be on the edge of their seats. Not like they wouldn’t before but that’s when the break line – breaks, and it’s full speed ahead for the rest of the movie.
What’s been your favorite part of the shoot?
Y’know what? It’s a lot of hours and it’s a horror movie and it’s Friday the 13th
so we’ve been shooting a lot of exterior night scenes. But the camaraderie between the cast has been a real joy. I’ve worked on stuff before where the cast – it’s not like we didn’t get along, but we didn’t get along this well. So meeting a bunch of new people and Derrick Mears [the new Jason] – is awesome. He’s such a kind, generous man. And he’s so hard working and it’s been fun getting to know him and Danielle and Travis Van Winkle and Amanda Righetti and Nick Mennell. I mean the cast is I can say – I’ve been doing this a while – and I can say, without a doubt, that I’m gonna keep in touch with people that I’ve met on this movie. That’s nice to be able to say, because usually it’s like summer camp “Hey, see ya later!” And then you don’t call ‘em. But here it’s like I can’t wait to hang out with them again.
They tell us that as much violence there is in this movie there’s also a lot of sex too. Do we get to see you topless?
(laughs) Not yet! If there’s reshoots they might try to yank off my shirt. That was also something I brought up with the writers and the producers and the director because I’m on a show on the CW [Supernatural ] – which is kind of for younger audiences, so I wouldn’t want to do anything that would be unbecoming of them. But no, no nudity for me as of now.

IESB reader AEROMUNCH caught an early screening of FRIDAY THE 13TH due out in theatres Friday, February 13, 2009.
Read what he thought about it below:
I was lucky enough to see a test screening of the Friday the 13th reboot in Long Beach, CA a couple weeks back. They announced to us that it was the very first screening of the movie, there were a lot of exec looking folks and I spied Marcus Nispel over in the back as well.
They warned us that what we saw was rough but it seemed like a finished, complete product. Music was in, effects were in. Plot wise, the movie does not reinvent the wheel at all. In fact, it doesn’t recreate any of the sequences from the first 2 movies. They are references in a classic scary story campfire scene, and there are a few visual shots that are things from the prior movies, but it basically acts like movies 1-2 happened in the past. For all intents and purposes, this movie acts like part 3.
So to give a breakdown of the film without giving too many spoilers:
It’s not a PG-13 horror movie at all. It’s been referenced in interviews, but there are a couple of nude/sex scenes in the movie (that are actually longer than I’d imagine…I’m wondering if they don’t trim those down by release) and the kills are all creative and brutal as you’d come to expect from the Jason flicks.
It starts with a teenagers in the woods sequence and that gives way to the main storyline which is a bunch of bratty rich kids going up to their parents’ cabin just off of Crystal Lake. They manage to have your typical slasher archetypes….the sweet girl, the slutty girl, the jerky jock, the weird guy who’s destined to be the hero, the token funny guy (there’s actually two in this one) and they all do their job well. You hate the jock, you root for the good guy and the comic relief characters are actually pretty funny. The movie got a few real laughs from the whole audience as well as some shrieks and groans on the harsher scenes. It uses a few of your typical “scare parts” but has some nice creative scenes as well…all in all it should be pleasing for fans of the series.
If you’re familiar with Nispel’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie, then you’ve got a good idea how this movie looks. It’s got a lot of that movie as far as the set designs and lighting….which in my opinion isn’t a bad thing. The movie generally has a serious tone, at least when Jason is around, and doesn’t camp it up like Jason X or Freddy vs. Jason. It takes the character seriously and tries to portray him as scary, and it does a good job. I don’t think slasher movies are super scary to start with, but this one makes a solid effort of it.
All in all, I came away really happy with the movie. I’m a big horror fan (and especially the Friday series) and it seems like the creators had a lot of respect for the series. They left the first two movies alone, and took the best elements of the rest of the series and made a movie with modern production values. I’ll be curious to see how much they change before release, but I’ll shell out my $11 in February.
